Here at EdStart we’re extremely passionate about improving children’s health and fitness, which is why World Obesity Day is an important event for the whole team.
It’s our mission to help tackle childhood obesity, as the issue reaches critical figures across the globe – with 124 million children now obese worldwide. We’re sure you don’t need us to tell you that obesity can lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease and cancer. Obese children are also highly likely to go on to become obese adults, which is why it’s more important than ever to make a change.
A costly issue
Published this week as part of World Obesity Day, the WHO’s report on a study of childhood BMI has drawn some stark conclusions. One in every ten young people in the UK is clinically obese.
According to experts, big junk food companies have a lot to answer for! A whopping £148 million is spent on the promotion of cheap, unhealthy food – but this pales in comparison to the £5.1 billion spent by the NHS on treating obesity.
You may be assuming that we have become lazier or greedier in recent times – but the obesity researcher in this article says that the changing world we live in is to blame.
Tackling obesity today
Unhealthy food is quicker, cheaper and more accessible than healthier options, and is often marketed specifically for children. This is why it is so important to encourage children to think about what they eat and what activities they can do to help improve their fitness.
Some studies have suggested that the banning of junk food by schools could be a solution – at Edstart we believe that schools have a major part to play in developing positive, healthy attitudes!
Not all doom and gloom
Healthy eating and physical activity go hand in hand when it comes to battling childhood obesity. At Edstart, we make it easy.
PE lessons in schools are a vital way to get kids moving and teach them about staying fit and healthy. Did you know that children should do 1 hour of exercise a day? Edstart’s Fitness Software is an ideal way to track children’s fitness levels and progress. With increased sports premiums being introduced, it’s a great time to invest in health and fitness education!
It doesn’t end when the bell rings. Out of school, we have a whole range of clubs and classes run by our dedicated coaches. Find a class here.
