Language Start

Language StartIt is internationally recognised that the best time to teach a foreign language is during the primary years. The importance of teaching Modern Foreign Languages in primary schools has been recently highlighted by the Department for Education and Skills in its publication Languages for All: Languages for Life - A Strategy for England (2002):

"Delivering an entitlement to language learning so that every pupil at Key Stage 2 is offered the opportunity to study at least one foreign language by the end of the decade is the centerpiece of our strategy"

By 2012 all primary schools will be expected to teach a modern foreign language. Language start can provide excellent staff who can support schools in achieving this aim ahead of target. There are various ways in which we can support schools with the delivery of Modern Foreign Languages:

  • Breakfast clubs
  • Integrating a language into the curriculum
  • Covering PPA time
  • Intensive language weeks

QCA found that "Factors such as the issue of motivation, duration of the early foreign language programme, the quality and competence of the teacher, the types of resources, all contribute... (to the success of MFL programmes.)". Language start can deliver programmes that promote a young learner's strengths and which focus on the development of good intonation, pronunciation and speaking skills.
